Kiyash’s debut novel, ONCE THERE WAS, became an instant New York Times bestseller, and went on to be a finalist for the William Morris Award, as well as garnering numerous state reading awards and accolades. It was named Middle Grade Book of the Year by Target, and was a finalist for Book of the Year at Barnes & Noble. His follow-up novel, BIRD OF A THOUSAND STORIES, was named one of the best books of the year by Kirkus Reviews, and won the 2026 Northern California Book Award.
Before becoming a novelist, Kiyash worked for many years in the fields of film and television production, and game and experience design. As a documentary producer, he has been nominated for an Emmy Award. The game projects he has contributed to have also won numerous industry awards and accolades.
His work is inspired by the mythology and storytelling traditions of his Persian heritage, by nature and the natural world, and by the bravery of young people everywhere.
